The ARRI Alexa 35 sensor in numbers
Super 35 4.6K: 27.99 × 19.22 mm, diagonal 34.0 mm. The tables below use a circle of confusion of 0.028 mm (sensor width ÷ 1000) and a 16:9 image taken from the full sensor width, 27.99 × 15.72 mm. A 50 mm lens frames like a 64 mm lens on full frame (factor 1.29).
The same circle of confusion — and therefore the same depth-of-field figures — applies to the ARRI Alexa Mini. Their frame widths differ by less than a millimetre of sensor.
Lens sets from our list that cover the full 34.0 mm diagonal: ARRI Signature Prime, Zeiss Supreme Prime, Zeiss CP.3, Cooke S7/i Full Frame Plus, Sigma Cine Prime FF, Canon CN-E Prime, Tokina Vista Prime. Super 35 sets such as the ARRI/Zeiss Master Prime or ARRI/Zeiss Ultra Prime vignette in the corners unless you crop.
Up to 120 fps in the manufacturer’s spec — at high frame rates many cameras crop the sensor, which narrows the angle of view; check the recording mode and enter its active area as a custom sensor.
Depth of field on the ARRI Alexa 35 at T2.8
Total depth of field (near to far limit) at three working distances. Example: 50 mm at 3 m holds 2.75 m to 3.31 m.
| Focal length | at 1.5 m | at 3.0 m | at 6.0 m |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 mm | 1.23 m | 9.03 m | ∞ |
| 25 mm | 57 cm | 2.6 m | 20.5 m |
| 35 mm | 28 cm | 1.18 m | 5.36 m |
| 50 mm | 14 cm | 56 cm | 2.32 m |
| 85 mm | 4.6 cm | 19 cm | 77 cm |
| 135 mm | 1.8 cm | 7.4 cm | 30 cm |
Field of view and shot size
What each focal length sees in 16:9 on this sensor, and what that makes of a standing person 3 m away.
| Focal length | Horizontal angle | Frame width at 3 m | Shot size at 3 m | Full-frame equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 mm | 75.7° | 4.67 m | wide shot | 23 mm |
| 25 mm | 58.5° | 3.36 m | full shot | 32 mm |
| 35 mm | 43.6° | 2.4 m | medium long shot | 45 mm |
| 50 mm | 31.3° | 1.68 m | medium shot | 64 mm |
| 85 mm | 18.7° | 99 cm | medium close-up | 109 mm |
| 135 mm | 11.8° | 62 cm | close-up | 174 mm |
Hyperfocal distance
Focus at the hyperfocal distance and everything from half that distance to infinity is acceptably sharp. On the ARRI Alexa 35 at T5.6: 4.01 m for 25 mm, 16 m for 50 mm.
| Focal length | T2.8 | T5.6 | T11 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 mm | 4.15 m | 2.08 m | 1.07 m |
| 25 mm | 8 m | 4.01 m | 2.05 m |
| 35 mm | 15.7 m | 7.85 m | 4.01 m |
| 50 mm | 31.9 m | 16 m | 8.17 m |
| 85 mm | 92.2 m | 46.2 m | 23.5 m |
| 135 mm | 232.6 m | 116.4 m | 59.3 m |
Frequently asked
What circle of confusion should I use for the ARRI Alexa 35?
0.028 mm follows the cinema convention of sensor width ÷ 1000. For 4K delivery on large screens, or when you judge focus on a big monitor, ÷ 1500 (0.019 mm) is safer — the tool’s “strict” switch does that.
How much depth of field does a 50 mm at T2.8 give on the ARRI Alexa 35?
At 3 m: 56 cm (2.75 m to 3.31 m). At 1.5 m it shrinks to 14 cm.
