The RED Komodo 6K sensor in numbers
Super 35 6K: 27.03 × 14.26 mm, diagonal 30.6 mm. The tables below use a circle of confusion of 0.027 mm (sensor width ÷ 1000) and a 16:9 image taken from the full sensor width, 25.38 × 14.26 mm. A 50 mm lens frames like a 71 mm lens on full frame (factor 1.42).
The same circle of confusion — and therefore the same depth-of-field figures — applies to the RED Komodo-X, the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K. Their frame widths differ by less than a millimetre of sensor.
Lens sets from our list that cover the full 30.6 mm diagonal: ARRI Signature Prime, ARRI/Zeiss Master Prime, ARRI/Zeiss Ultra Prime, Zeiss Supreme Prime, Zeiss CP.3, Cooke S4/i, Cooke S7/i Full Frame Plus, Sigma Cine Prime FF, Canon CN-E Prime, Leitz Summicron-C, Tokina Vista Prime, DZOFilm Pictor Zoom.
Up to 50 fps in the manufacturer’s spec — at high frame rates many cameras crop the sensor, which narrows the angle of view; check the recording mode and enter its active area as a custom sensor.
Depth of field on the RED Komodo 6K at T2.8
Total depth of field (near to far limit) at three working distances. Example: 50 mm at 3 m holds 2.75 m to 3.29 m.
| Focal length | at 1.5 m | at 3.0 m | at 6.0 m |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 mm | 1.18 m | 8.09 m | ∞ |
| 25 mm | 55 cm | 2.48 m | 18.2 m |
| 35 mm | 27 cm | 1.14 m | 5.11 m |
| 50 mm | 13 cm | 54 cm | 2.23 m |
| 85 mm | 4.4 cm | 18 cm | 75 cm |
| 135 mm | 1.7 cm | 7.1 cm | 29 cm |
Field of view and shot size
What each focal length sees in 16:9 on this sensor, and what that makes of a standing person 3 m away.
| Focal length | Horizontal angle | Frame width at 3 m | Shot size at 3 m | Full-frame equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 mm | 70.4° | 4.23 m | full shot | 26 mm |
| 25 mm | 53.8° | 3.05 m | full shot | 35 mm |
| 35 mm | 39.9° | 2.18 m | medium long shot | 50 mm |
| 50 mm | 28.5° | 1.52 m | medium shot | 71 mm |
| 85 mm | 17.0° | 90 cm | medium close-up | 121 mm |
| 135 mm | 10.7° | 56 cm | close-up | 191 mm |
Hyperfocal distance
Focus at the hyperfocal distance and everything from half that distance to infinity is acceptably sharp. On the RED Komodo 6K at T5.6: 4.16 m for 25 mm, 16.6 m for 50 mm.
| Focal length | T2.8 | T5.6 | T11 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 mm | 4.3 m | 2.16 m | 1.11 m |
| 25 mm | 8.29 m | 4.16 m | 2.13 m |
| 35 mm | 16.2 m | 8.14 m | 4.16 m |
| 50 mm | 33.1 m | 16.6 m | 8.47 m |
| 85 mm | 95.7 m | 47.9 m | 24.4 m |
| 135 mm | 241.2 m | 120.7 m | 61.5 m |
Frequently asked
What circle of confusion should I use for the RED Komodo 6K?
0.027 mm follows the cinema convention of sensor width ÷ 1000. For 4K delivery on large screens, or when you judge focus on a big monitor, ÷ 1500 (0.018 mm) is safer — the tool’s “strict” switch does that.
How much depth of field does a 50 mm at T2.8 give on the RED Komodo 6K?
At 3 m: 54 cm (2.75 m to 3.29 m). At 1.5 m it shrinks to 13 cm.
