Start with the type of production, then decide whether you want one suite or a set of specialists.

Suite or specialists?

Film production software covers a wide field: writing and breaking down the script, the shot list and storyboard, the shooting schedule, call sheets, budgets, gear, crew and finally review of the cut. Seven tools in this guide try to cover most of pre-production in one workspace. Four are specialists that do one job in depth: scheduling, budgeting, review or resource planning. Notion is the do-it-yourself baseline.

The deciding question is what you produce. A feature film starts from a screenplay and needs breakdowns and a stripboard. A commercial starts from a brief and needs a concept, a shot list the client approves and a tight shoot day. Tools built for one rarely fit the other perfectly.

Disclosure: this guide is published by TillyBoard, and TillyBoard is on the list. We rank it first for commercial and brand-content production and say plainly where other tools are the better choice. All competitor facts come from the vendors' own websites and are linked.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best film production software in 2026?

For commercials, brand films and social content we recommend TillyBoard. For scripted film and TV in one browser suite, StudioBinder; for German-speaking production offices, Yamdu. Specialists lead in their field: Movie Magic Scheduling for stripboards, Saturation for budgets, Frame.io for review.

Is there free film production software?

Yes. TillyBoard, StudioBinder, Celtx, Filmustage and Saturation have free plans without time limit, each with limits on projects or features. Frame.io and Notion also have free plans.

Should I use one suite or several specialist tools?

A suite keeps shot list, schedule and call sheet in sync, so changes do not have to be copied. Specialists go deeper in one field, such as stripboards or cost reports. Many productions combine a suite for planning with a specialist for budget or post.

Which software is best for commercials rather than feature films?

Commercials start from a brief, not a screenplay. TillyBoard is built for that: concept, shot list with runtime per segment, shoot day and client approval. Tools built around script breakdown, such as Filmustage or Movie Magic Scheduling, fit scripted features and series better.

Which tools have mobile apps for set?

TillyBoard has native apps for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Yamdu and Studiovity have iOS and Android apps, Farmerswife and Frame.io have iOS apps. StudioBinder, Filmustage and Dramatify run in the mobile browser.

What does film production software cost?

Entry plans in this comparison start at about €10 to €50 a month: Celtx $11.24 billed annually, TillyBoard €19 billed annually, Studiovity €26.90, Dramatify €27 for three seats, StudioBinder $29, Saturation $32 billed annually, Yamdu €39 and Filmustage $49. Movie Magic Scheduling costs $299.88 a year.

Can the crew use it without an account?

In TillyBoard, cast and crew confirm call sheets via link and clients review and approve without signing up. Dramatify gives cast and crew free read access on all plans.
